Green policy

Environmental resources provide more than just the energies or supplies needed for production and operations in Topoint. We regard the environment as the very foundation upon which we build a place where Topoint employees can effectively pursue their careers. Environmental protection is a key element of the sustainable corporate development program of Topoint as it resonates with our values and goals for fulfilling lifestyle, satisfying career and sustainability. Topoint has established an environmental policy of legal compliance, resource conservation, waste reduction, and total participation and adopted ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) as the basis to implement regular EMS auditing in our sites. We use the improvement cycle of plan, do, check and act (PDCA) to ensure that the entire EMS operations are both suitable and effective. We have updated our EMS to the latest version of ISO 14001:2015 in 2017.

Energy resource management

Electricity is the main energy resource used by Topoint. In 2017, total internal electrical power consumption at Topoint was 4.2% lower than that of the previous year. Average energy intensity per person was 5.2% less than that of 2016. We also implemented an independent greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory check at the organization level in accordance with the version 4.1 Standardized GHG Emissions Reporting. In 2017, total GHG emissions at Topoint was 6,488 tons of CO2e. Usage of electrical power under scope 2 was the primary source of the GHG emissions and made up 90.7% of emissions of the factory. We therefore focused upon power conservation to reduce GHG emissions. A power conservation task force was organized to propose an annual power-use reduction plan, which was then implemented to reduce carbon emissions.

Energy saving and carbon reduction projects throughout the years include:
  1. Replacing air conditioning equipment with high performance units.
  2. Installing a frequency transformer for the cooling tower fans to modulate operation speeds. The difference between effluent temperature and wet-bulb temperature of the cooling tower was used as the basis for fan speed control.
  3. Complete lighting replacement project. All conventional indoor lighting devices were replaced with high-performance and energy-saving LED lighting.
  4. Using natural ventilation or adding fans and ventilators in public areas to reduce the loading of air conditioning units.
  5. Continue to promote energy saving and carbon reduction concepts to all fellow employees.

Water resource management

Municipal water is the primary source of water used at Topoint, mainly used by production processes, while remaining for non-production purpose. Although water usage was 1.3% higher in 2017 than that of 2016, water intensity per person for 2017 was only 0.2% mildly higher than that of 2016.

Topoint is well-aware of the scarcity of water, and has implemented water conservation measures for both our production processes as well as domestic use. These measures include:

  1. Dynamic activation of the cooling towers to reduce evaporation, dissipation, and splattering of coolant fluid of the air conditioning system, and adding a coolant processing apparatus.
  2. Installing a process water recycling and processing apparatus, allowing treated water to be recycled and reused.
  3. Completely replace equipment to water conserving models to reduce domestic use.

Waste management

The primary type of wastes generated by the production processes of Topoint are general business waste. We do not produce hazardous wastes. We uphold the 4R principle of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Replace, and reusable resources in wastes are recycled accordingly. We also employ source management to prohibit, replace, and reduce materials that may impact our environment. In 2017, total waste generated by Topoint reached 71.57 tons, a value that was 29.4% less compared to last year (including a delay in the amount of waste processed due to vendor change). This was regarded as an achievement of our process improvement and resource recycling projects, allowing us to generate less waste while reducing our environmental impact.
